Bad Song Lyrics: Too Much, The Spice Girls

September 30, 2015

If you’re like me, you grew up listening to the Spice Girls, watching their music videos (and their movie) and it all made perfect sense at the time. As long as you were between 8-13 that was some appealing shit, right there.

Ever taken a trip down memory lane and dwelt upon how utterly ridiculous everything was? I mean, everything? Yeah, well if not, we’re doing it now. This is Too Much. No, really, this is Too Much. That’s the song. Well, the bold bits are. The rest is just me ranting.

Love is blind, as far as the eye can see
Deep and meaningless, words to me

Oooh, metaphorical clichés

Easy lover, I need a friend
Road to nowhere, twist and turns but will this never end

I’m still not quite sure what’s going on, some sort of romantic angst, I’ll bet.

Well my dear you’ll know that he pleases me
(Pleases me)

Well at least that’s something. You won’t believe how many ladies can’t even say that.

But short time solution ain’t no resolution
That ain’t no release for me

It’s a little bit of release, though, isn’t it? •smirky face•

Too much of something is bad enough

Too much of what? I suppose the key phrase here is “too much”, meaning more than is sufficient, but it depends what it is as to how much of a problem it is. Too much flour and your cake just isn’t as tasty. Too much juice and you may have a problem with storing it all for later usage. Too much sex and you may end up a little sore and chafed. I’m still not quite sure of the actual problem we’re discussing here.

But something’s coming over me to make me wonder
Too much of nothing is just as tough

Well, yes, too much of nothing is just nothing and nothing is tough if you do need something. I’m not sure if it’s exactly as tough as ‘too much of something’ though. If anything I’d say it was tougher. When you’ve got nothing, you’ve got nothing. There’s no where to go from there. Where as if you have too much of something you could possibly onsell some, give some away, redistribute in some manner. Too much of something gives you more in the way of options. Unless it’s too much sex. Then you’re just going to have to cut down on the sex.

I need to know the way to feel to keep me satisfied

That would be helpful, yes.

Unwrap myself from around my finger
Hold me too tight or left to linger

I feel like you just needed something to rhyme with finger. I’m guessing you feel he’s either coming on too strong or just ignoring you? Either one or the other? Nothing in between? Is that what this is about? Have I just had an epiphany? He probably thinks you’re confusing as hell and can’t make up your mind. Happy mediums don’t seem to be either of your strong suits… some may say you’re bloody drama queens…

Something fine built to last
Slipped up there I guess we’re running out of time too fast

We are talking about sex, right? Or not? It’s always a little hazy with Spice Girl lyrics.

Yes my dear you know he shows me
(Moves me)
There’s no complication there’s no explanation
It’s just a groove in me

I’m lost again. What? There’s no complication? You have grooves? What did he show you? Did the thing that he showed you leave the groove?

Too much of something is bad enough
(Bad enough)
But something’s coming over me to make me wonder
Too much of nothing is just as tough
(Just as tough)
I need to know the way to feel to keep me satisfied

Let’s work together to find the ideal amount, shall we? Do we need measuring cups?

What part of no don’t you understand
(Understand, understand)

Well… you haven’t actually said no anywhere in this song up until this point. I agree, though, no should be easily understood, but I do wish you’d clarify exactly what you’re saying no to. Was it the measuring cups?

I want a man not a boy who thinks he can
Boy who thinks he can

Well, quite. Don’t do things with underage boys. Quite illegal, you know.

Too much of something is bad enough
But something’s coming over me to make me wonder
Too much of nothing is just as tough
I need to know the way to feel to keep me satisfied

Too much of something is bad enough
(Bad enough)
But something’s coming over me to make me wonder
Too much of nothing is just as tough
(Just as tough)
I need to know the way to feel to keep me satisfied

You can keep repeating it, but it won’t help you figure it out. Do you want to be together or not? Are you both legal? I mean start with hanging out once a week. If that’s too much the relationship probably isn’t worth pursuing. If it’s not enough you can up the ante. Sometimes you just have to bake a few dud cakes before you figure out the proper amount of flour for your oven, your recipe and your tastes. There’s no quick way around this.

Too much of nothing so why don’t we give it a try
Too much of something we’re gonna be living a lie
Too much of nothing so why don’t we give it a try
Too much of something we’re gonna be living a lie

Too much of nothing so why don’t we give it a try
Too much of something we’re gonna be living a lie
Too much of nothing so why don’t we give it a try
Too much of something we’re gonna be living a lie

Please. Just get some cats.

  • I have no idea what this is about, but 2 become 1 is definitely about sex! The “put it on” bit refers to the condom.

    • Yes, always good to think about condoms while sitting on the Brooklyn Bridge 😉

  • Song lyrics really are crazy if you think about them!

    • Yes. And people get paid millions to write them. Crazy world.

When my friends and I played Spice Girls I always wanted to be Baby. That’s embarrassing. And now you know. x

  • If you concentrate on the music and tune the lyrics out, it’s kind of a tolerable experience XD I still love the Spice Girls movie. It’s just as weird to me as it was when it first came out — maybe not Eraserhead or Blue Velvet weird, but it’s pretty up there. And I dig Mel C’s foray into dancey electronica. I TURN TO YOUUUU LIKE A FLOWER LEANING TO-WARD THE SUNNN…

    • I rewatched that music video just recently… that was a weird time. I did like Geri Halliwell’s solo career XD

  • This is too much. You’ve got me laughing my ass out at work (as always).

Now I wonder what your favourite Spice Girls song is. Haha!

    • I’m not sure I have a favourite anymore… I do want to see that movie again, though!

  • Revisiting the past bands that you once loved is never a good idea in my experience, you either are left thinking did I really like them, the song lyrics that used to rip to your teenage morose soul is left feeling shallow and stupid and you wonder why you spent hours listening to them Lucy x

    • Haha, I know. I was clearly out of my mind. XD
